Family ties to a Bulgarian citizen give a non-EU national one of the most straightforward routes to living in Bulgaria. The law treats these families favourably: the visa is faster, there is no state fee for it, and the resulting long-term residence can be renewed for as long as the family relationship continues.
Two situations the ground covers
- You are married to a Bulgarian citizen. The marriage must be a civil marriage — a religious ceremony alone is not enough — and, if concluded abroad, recognised and recorded in Bulgaria.
- You are the parent of a child who is a Bulgarian citizen. This applies whether or not you are married to the child’s other parent, provided you live in one household with the child.
Why it is easier than other routes
Documents
Alongside your passport and the standard supporting documents — criminal record certificate, health insurance, proof of accommodation and of means of subsistence — you will need the document proving the family link:
- a marriage certificate, or
- the child’s birth certificate,
apostilled or legalised and translated into Bulgarian as required.
How the procedure runs
Visa
Apply for a Type D visa at a Bulgarian embassy or consulate abroad, with the documents proving the family link.
Arrival and application
After entering Bulgaria, file the application for long-term residence with the Migration Directorate.
Residence card
The permit is issued for one year.
Renewal
Renew each year while the family relationship continues — or move to permanent residence when eligible.
A point worth checking
If your Bulgarian spouse has lived and worked with you in another EU country, EU free-movement rules may give you an alternative — and sometimes stronger — legal basis. It is worth a short analysis before choosing the route.
Questions clients ask
We are not married but have a child together. Can I still apply?
Yes. Being the parent of a Bulgarian child is a ground in itself, regardless of marriage.
Do I need to prove a minimum income?
You will need to show means of subsistence and accommodation as part of the standard documents, but the economic requirements are lighter than for business or investor grounds.
Can I work with this permit?
Family members of Bulgarian citizens holding long-term residence on this ground have access to the Bulgarian labour market. We confirm the position for your specific permit when it is issued.
