For most long-term residence grounds, the route into Bulgaria has two stages: a Type D (long-stay) visa obtained abroad, then the residence permit applied for in Bulgaria. For people living in the Gulf, two things decide how smoothly the first stage goes — applying at the right Bulgarian mission, and getting documents into a form Bulgaria accepts.
Which Bulgarian mission
You usually apply at the Bulgarian mission responsible for the country where you hold residence, or at the mission in your country of nationality. Choose the one where your documents and appointments are easiest to arrange.
| You live in | Where to apply |
|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | Consular Section of the Consulate General in Dubai, by appointment booked online; families and group appointments are arranged by email |
| Saudi Arabia | Embassy of Bulgaria in Riyadh |
| Qatar | Embassy of Bulgaria in Doha |
| Kuwait | Embassy of Bulgaria in Kuwait City |
| Bahrain | Bulgaria has no embassy in Manama; it is covered by the embassy in Riyadh |
| Oman | Confirm with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which mission accepts applications |
Appointment systems and contact details change, so check the current arrangements on the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before booking. In the UAE, VFS Global accepts only short-stay (Type C) applications — a Type D appointment there is a wasted trip.
What you will need
The exact list depends on the residence ground, and we prepare it for your case. Most applications include:
- The application form, a photograph and a passport valid well beyond the planned stay, with blank pages.
- Your Gulf residence permit — Emirates ID, iqama or QID — valid for the whole procedure.
- The documents for your residence ground: the Migration Directorate's approval for a job, company documents for a manager, the notarial deed and bank certificate for a property owner, the investment certificate for an investor, family documents for reunification.
- Proof of accommodation in Bulgaria.
- Health insurance covering your stay.
- Proof of means of subsistence, where the ground requires it.
- A criminal record certificate, where the ground requires it.
- The consular fee.
Getting Gulf documents accepted
A document issued in one country is accepted in Bulgaria only once its origin has been confirmed — by an apostille or by legalisation, depending on the country.
| Issued in | What Bulgaria needs |
|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | Apostille (Saudi Arabia joined the Apostille Convention in December 2022) |
| Oman, Bahrain | Apostille |
| United Arab Emirates | Legalisation: attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by a Bulgarian mission in the UAE |
| Qatar, Kuwait | Legalisation through the issuing country's foreign ministry and the Bulgarian embassy |
| Your home country | An apostille if it is a party to the Convention (India and China are, for example); otherwise legalisation |
Documents are then translated into Bulgarian. Translations for official use are usually made in Bulgaria by an authorised translation agency; translations made abroad are often not accepted, so check before paying for them.
One problem comes up again and again: names transliterated differently on different documents — Mohammed on the passport, Mohamed on the marriage certificate, Muhammad on the diploma. Consular officers and the Migration Directorate notice. Check every document against the passport before it is legalised, and where the spellings cannot be aligned, prepare an official confirmation that they refer to the same person.
After the visa
Travel
Enter Bulgaria while the visa is valid.
Apply for residence
File the residence application with the Migration Directorate — in Sofia or at a regional unit — before the visa expires.
Biometrics
Fingerprints and a photograph are taken for the residence card.
Residence card
The permit is issued and the card produced. Renewal dates go in the diary straight away.
The overall timeline depends on the ground. Our overview of residence options shows what each one involves.
If the visa is refused
A consular refusal is a decision that can be challenged — we have had a Type D visa refusal overturned. Often the faster fix is a new application that answers the reason for the refusal. See what to do when residence is refused.
Mistakes we see
- Booking a VFS Global appointment for a Type D visa.
- A Gulf residence permit that expires before the procedure ends.
- An apostille on UAE, Qatari or Kuwaiti documents, which need legalisation instead.
- Names spelt differently across documents.
- Applying for the visa before the residence ground is ready — for example, before the Migration Directorate has approved a job offer.
Questions clients ask
Can I apply in my home country instead of the Gulf?
Usually yes, at the Bulgarian mission there. Choose the country where your documents are easiest to obtain and appointments are available sooner.
Can my family apply at the same time?
Depending on the residence ground, family members apply together with you or once your own permit has been issued. We plan the order at the start, so nobody's documents expire while they wait. In Dubai, family appointments are arranged by email.
Is the D visa a residence permit?
No. It allows you to enter Bulgaria and stay for up to 180 days. The residence permit is applied for after you arrive, before the visa expires.
How long does the visa take?
Usually two to seven weeks from a complete application, depending on the mission and the time of year.
